Nel 1957 Rod Davis, quindicenne, era il cantante di un gruppetto che si faceva chiamare The Quarryman.. In estate, dopo un'esibizione pubblica, di cui restano solo dei brevi brani di pessima qualità audio, Ivan Vaughan, componente del gruppo presentò un certo Paul McCartney al leader dei Quarryman, John Lennon..

Rod Davis venne sostituito, ma non ha rimpianti. Dopo 40 anni da quel giorno, è rientrato a far parte dei Quarrymen, e il 10 luglio suonerà al Beatles'day - imagine the concert.

Rod è attualmente sessantaseienne, ed è un insegnante in pensione.

The Quarrymen saranno raggiunti da Gerry Marsden, The Swinging Blue Jeans, Merseybeats, Mike Pender degli the Searchers, the Original Fourmost, The Black Knights, Karl Terry & The Cruisers and The Undertakers.

Circa la sua uscita dal gruppo:

“John asked me if I wanted to go to Hamburg and play drums. But I was halfway through my degree and my mother would have killed me if I’d given it up for ‘that Lennon’, as he was always known in our house.”

[John mi chiese se volevo andare ad Amburgo e suonare la batteria. Ci pensai un po', ma mia madre mi avrebbe ucciso se fossi andato via per "quel Lennon", così era conosciuto in quella casa] 

“I don’t remember seeing Paul that day (July 6, 1957) at all, and, for a cheap laugh, I told people I may have missed the most important moment in rock ‘n’ roll history because I went for a pee!”
